The Golden Hind

The Golden Hind | 100 Year Old, Family-Run Chippy in Marylebone

Never take anything you find in the newspaper too seriously.

Unless it’s fish and chips from The Golden Hind: Marylebone’s more than 100 year old, family-run, BYO chippy.  It’s helmed by Cypriot ex-fashion designer, Tony, who not only takes the coveted Nudge award for ‘most perplexing career transition in history, ever’, but who also – amidst a dwindling number of once famous central London restaurants – has lovingly retained The Golden Hind’s reputation as, quite simply, a local institution.

And here’s why:

It serves good fish and chips. Everything (except the halibut steak, whose journey is a long one) is caught fresh, direct from Grimsby and delivered on ice. The batter is thin, the fish is plenty and the tartare is thick. There’s cod, salmon, plaice, skate and scampi; fish fillets and cakes; chips, garden and mushy peas; and, in true English fashion, apple crumble, spotted dick and bread and butter pud.

It’s very reasonably priced. Thanks in part to it being reasonably priced. And thanks in (other) part to it being BYOB.

And lastly,

It’s a real chippy. As in, the room is basic, with simple lino tiles, white walls and wooden panelling; there’s a giant, decommissioned antique enamelled fryer, now used to store menus and shop memorabilia; and finally, there’s a fast moving line stretching right out the door. But it’s buzzy, friendly, welcoming and in no way, beyond a shadow of a doubt, takes itself too seriously.

Therefore being the perfect place to take someone who does.

NOTE: You can walk right on into The Golden Hind, but if you want to be sure to get a table, you can make a reservation right here.
