Le Chabanais

Le Chabanais | Mayfair Restaurant

Today’s story has a sad beginning, and a happy ending.

It begins – as all of the best stories do – with the sad news that Paul Boudier has left his position as Head Chef at Le Chateaubriand in Paris, a restaurant which has held a regular spot on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list for the past 6 years.

Fortunately, however, Paul’s left in order to take up the Head Chef job at Le Chabanais, a new Mayfair bistro from the Le Chateaubriand team.

Officially marking the arrival in London of a wave of French dining that eschews formality and champions good, simple cooking, it’s designed by Clément Blanchet… who, amongst other things, also designed the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion. Which is a nugget of information that will be of great use should you ever decide to –

1) Dine here. And,

2) Pretend that you know something about French designers while doing so.

The restaurant – which has the dubious honour of being the first in the world to be coated almost entirely in brass –  serves dishes like tandoori quail; basque squid stew; and lamb with spring salad and feta. To drink you’ll find a concise French wine list, plus variations on classic French cocktails both upstairs and in the intimate downstairs cocktail bar… the décor of which is inspired by the famous Parisian brothel after which the entire place is named.

Knew there was a happy ending in here somewhere.
