Letters Live

Here’s some first class news: Letters Live is coming back this Spring.

If you’ve not come across the event before, it’s the theatrical realisation of the famous books Letters of Note (the bestselling anthology compiled by Shaun Usher) and To The Letter by Simon Garfield. A starry line-up of famous people – actors, writers, activists, and others – stand up on stage and recite famous letters from history’s notable luminaries, alongside touching correspondence from regular joes. It’s a great concept, executed brilliantly. And this year it’ll be staged in the jaw-dropping surroundings of the Royal Albert Hall in South Ken.

Now we can’t say precisely who’ll be doing the reading, or what it is they will be reading, but that’s all part of the joy of Letters Live: it’s all a complete mystery until the night itself. But we do know that the next event on 6th March will be ‘an extra special show’ to celebrate International Women’s Day, with a charity donation in each ticket. And we can also tell you that previous speakers have included Benedict Cumberbatch, Gillian Anderson, Sir Ian McKellen, Olivia Colman, Kylie Minogue, and maaaaany many more. Expect some very famous faces to step out on stage.

In previous years, the letters themselves have included Virginia Woolf’s heart-breaking suicide note; the recipe for drop scones sent by the late Queen Elizabeth II to President Eisenhower; and Richard Burton’s parting words to Elizabeth Taylor at the end of their tempestuous marriage.

Yes, apparently they were suitable for reprint…
